Radar band

Term · Meteorology and atmospheric science · MLC-T-MET-008259

A specific range of frequencies within the electromagnetic spectrum allocated for use by radar systems. The choice of band determines the radar's characteristics, including its sensitivity to precipitation particles and its susceptibility to attenuation by rainfall. For example, S-band (2-4 GHz) is used for long-range severe weather detection, while higher-frequency X-band (8-12 GHz) and Ka-band (27-40 GHz) radars provide finer resolution for cloud and light precipitation studies.
