Differential attenuation

Term · Meteorology and atmospheric science · MLC-T-MET-004981

The difference in the attenuation of two electromagnetic waves, typically at different frequencies or polarizations, as they propagate through the atmosphere. In radar meteorology, this phenomenon is used to estimate rainfall rates and identify hydrometeor types. For example, X-band radar signals are more attenuated by heavy rain than C-band signals, providing a basis for differential measurements.
