Precipitation attenuation

Term · Meteorology and atmospheric science · MLC-T-MET-002098

  1. The reduction in the intensity of an electromagnetic signal as it passes through precipitation, such as rain, snow, or hail. This phenomenon is caused by the absorption and scattering of the signal by hydrometeors. It is a factor that must be accounted for in radar meteorology and satellite communication systems, especially at higher frequencies.

  2. The loss of energy that radar beam experiences as it passes through an area of precipitation.
