Radar altitude
Term · Meteorology and atmospheric science · MLC-T-MET-008258
The height of an aircraft or satellite above the terrain directly beneath it, as measured by a radio altimeter. The instrument transmits a radio signal to the surface and calculates the distance based on the time required for the reflected signal to return. This measurement, also known as Above Ground Level (AGL) altitude, is distinct from barometric altitude, which is the height measured relative to a standard pressure level, such as mean sea level.
