Altimeter

Term · Meteorology and atmospheric science · MLC-T-MET-000118

  1. An instrument used to measure altitude, primarily by sensing changes in atmospheric pressure. Most altimeters are aneroid barometers calibrated to display height above a reference level, such as sea level or a specific airport elevation. Radar altimeters, in contrast, measure height above the terrain directly beneath the aircraft.

  2. An instrument that indicates the altitude of an object above a fixed level. Pressure altimeters use an aneroid barometer with a scale graduated in altitude instead of pressure.
