  1. An instrument used to measure atmospheric pressure. Common types include mercury barometers, which measure the height of a mercury column supported by atmospheric pressure, and aneroid barometers, which use a sealed metal capsule that expands and contracts with pressure changes. Barometers are fundamental tools for weather forecasting and altitude determination.
