Barometer cistern

The reservoir of mercury at the base of a mercury barometer, into which the open end of the evacuated glass tube is submerged. The atmospheric pressure acting on the surface of the mercury in the cistern supports the column of mercury in the tube. Its level must be carefully maintained or accounted for in precise measurements.
