Torricelli's tube

A simple barometer consisting of an inverted glass tube, closed at one end and filled with mercury, with its open end submerged in a reservoir of mercury. The height of the mercury column in the tube indicates the atmospheric pressure. Evangelista Torricelli invented this device in the 17th century, demonstrating the existence of atmospheric pressure.
