Cistern barometer

Term · Meteorology and atmospheric science · MLC-T-MET-004317

A type of mercury barometer where a glass tube, sealed at one end and filled with mercury, is inverted into a small open reservoir or cistern of mercury. The atmospheric pressure acting on the surface of the mercury in the cistern supports the column of mercury in the tube. The height of the mercury column above the cistern level directly indicates the atmospheric pressure.
