Mercury column

The vertical extent of mercury within a barometer tube, whose height directly corresponds to the atmospheric pressure exerted on the mercury in the reservoir. Changes in the height of this column indicate rising or falling air pressure. The measurement is typically expressed in millimeters or inches of mercury.
