Weight barometer

Term · Meteorology and atmospheric science · MLC-T-MET-010198

A type of barometer that measures atmospheric pressure by balancing the force exerted by the atmosphere against a set of known weights. In one design, the pressure acts on a volume of gas or a mercury cistern, and weights are added or removed from a balance arm to maintain equilibrium. The total weight required to achieve balance is directly proportional to the atmospheric pressure, providing a highly accurate but less portable measurement than a mercury barometer.
