Mountain barometer

Term · Meteorology and atmospheric science · MLC-T-MET-007422

A portable mercury barometer designed for measuring atmospheric pressure at different altitudes, particularly in mountainous terrain. It features a design that allows it to be transported without spilling mercury or admitting air into the vacuum at the top of the tube. These instruments were historically used in surveying and geodesy to determine elevation changes based on the observed pressure drop with height.
