Torricellian vacuum
Term · Meteorology and atmospheric science · MLC-T-MET-009704
The space above the mercury column in a barometer, which is nearly devoid of air and thus approximates a perfect vacuum. This phenomenon was first observed by Evangelista Torricelli in the 17th century during his experiments with mercury barometers. The height of the mercury column in this vacuum provides a direct measure of atmospheric pressure.
