Mercury barometer

Term · Meteorology and atmospheric science · MLC-T-MET-001679

  1. An instrument used to measure atmospheric pressure, consisting of a glass tube sealed at one end and inverted into a reservoir of mercury. The height of the mercury column in the tube, supported by the external atmospheric pressure, indicates the current pressure. Readings are typically corrected for temperature and elevation to obtain sea-level pressure.

  2. An instrument for measuring atmospheric pressure. The instrument contains an evacuated and graduated glass tube in which mercury rises or falls as the pressure of the atmosphere increases or decreases.
