Mercury

A heavy, silvery-white metallic element that is liquid at standard temperature and pressure, historically used in meteorological instruments. Its high density and uniform thermal expansion made it suitable for thermometers and barometers. However, due to its toxicity, its use in these instruments has largely been phased out.
