Capillary depression
Term · Meteorology and atmospheric science · MLC-T-MET-004140
The lowering of a liquid's surface in a narrow tube or pore below the level it would otherwise occupy, caused by surface tension when the liquid does not wet the tube walls. This effect is observed with mercury in glass tubes, where the adhesive forces between mercury and glass are weaker than the cohesive forces within mercury. It necessitates a correction in instruments like mercury barometers.
