Capillary rise

Term · Meteorology and atmospheric science · MLC-T-MET-004148

The upward movement of water through small pores or tubes against the force of gravity, driven by surface tension and adhesive forces between the water and the pore walls. This phenomenon is particularly relevant in soil science, where it affects the distribution of moisture in the unsaturated zone. The height of capillary rise is inversely proportional to the radius of the capillary tube.
