Capillary water

Term · Meteorology and atmospheric science · MLC-T-MET-004150

Water held in the small pores and interstices of soil or other porous media by surface tension and adhesive forces. This water is available to plants and moves against gravity due to capillary action. It is distinct from gravitational water, which drains freely, and hygroscopic water, which is tightly bound to soil particles.
