Capillary action

The process by which a liquid flows in narrow spaces without the assistance of, or even in opposition to, external forces like gravity. This phenomenon results from the combination of surface tension, adhesion, and cohesion. It is a fundamental mechanism for water transport in soils, plants, and other porous media.
