Capillarity correction

Term · Meteorology and atmospheric science · MLC-T-MET-004136

An adjustment made to mercury barometer readings to compensate for the depression of the mercury column caused by surface tension at the glass-mercury interface. This capillary action creates a convex meniscus, whose peak is lower than the level the mercury would otherwise reach. The correction amount is positive and depends on the tube's diameter and the meniscus height.
