Capillary interstice
Term · Meteorology and atmospheric science · MLC-T-MET-004145
A microscopic pore or channel within a porous medium, such as soil or snow, where water can be held by surface tension against the force of gravity. The small size of these spaces creates strong capillary forces that draw in and retain liquid water, a process known as capillary action. The amount of water held in these interstices is a key component of soil moisture and influences the physical properties of a snowpack.
