Capillary hysteresis

Term · Meteorology and atmospheric science · MLC-T-MET-004144

The phenomenon where the relationship between soil water content and capillary pressure (or matric potential) is not unique, but depends on the wetting or drying history of the soil. This means that for a given capillary pressure, the water content will be different during a drying cycle compared to a wetting cycle. It is caused by variations in pore geometry and contact angle.
