Radar altimeter

An electronic instrument that measures the altitude of an aircraft or spacecraft above the terrain by transmitting radio waves and measuring the time taken for the reflected signal to return. This device provides precise ground clearance information, independent of atmospheric pressure. It is distinct from a barometric altimeter, which measures altitude above a reference pressure level.
