Mediterranean outflow

Term · Meteorology and atmospheric science · MLC-T-MET-007187

A deep, warm, and highly saline current of water that exits the Mediterranean Sea into the Atlantic Ocean. This dense water flows westward at depth through the Strait of Gibraltar, sinking and spreading into the North Atlantic after it passes the strait. The outflow's core is typically found at a depth of about 1,000 meters and is a major contributor to the temperature and salinity characteristics of North Atlantic Intermediate Water.
