Intermediate water
Term · Meteorology and atmospheric science · MLC-T-MET-006596
A layer of ocean water found between the surface mixed layer and the deep water, characterized by distinct temperature and salinity properties. This water mass typically forms at the surface in high-latitude regions and then sinks and spreads equatorward. Antarctic Intermediate Water is a prominent example, found at depths of 600 to 1500 meters.
