Central water
Term · Meteorology and atmospheric science · MLC-T-MET-010423
A distinct water mass found in the upper layers of the ocean, characterized by specific temperature and salinity properties that are relatively uniform over large horizontal extents. It forms through the mixing of surface waters in subtropical gyres and then spreads equatorward. This water mass typically lies beneath the mixed layer and above the deep water.
