Water mass

A large body of ocean water characterized by a relatively uniform range of temperature and salinity properties. These properties are acquired at the surface in specific formation regions and are then maintained as the water mass circulates through the ocean interior. Examples include Antarctic Bottom Water and North Atlantic Deep Water.
