Arctic Intermediate Water
Term · Meteorology and atmospheric science · MLC-T-MET-003611
A water mass in the Arctic Ocean situated between the colder, fresher Arctic Surface Water and the denser Arctic Bottom Water. This layer primarily consists of modified Atlantic Water that has cooled and freshened as it circulates into the Arctic basins. It is identifiable as a temperature maximum, with temperatures typically ranging from 0.5°C to 3°C, and is saltier than the surface layer but less dense than the deep and bottom waters.
