Arctic air
Term · Meteorology and atmospheric science · MLC-T-MET-003605
A type of air mass that originates over the Arctic Ocean and surrounding landmasses, characterized by extremely cold temperatures, low moisture content, and high stability. It forms during long winter nights when radiative cooling is maximized over snow and ice-covered surfaces. When this air mass moves southward, it can bring severe cold outbreaks to mid-latitude regions.
