Arctic Bottom Water

Term · Meteorology and atmospheric science · MLC-T-MET-003606

The coldest and densest water mass in the Arctic Ocean, occupying the deepest layers of the Arctic basins. It forms primarily on the broad continental shelves, such as the Barents and Kara Seas, through the process of brine rejection during the formation of sea ice, which increases the water's salinity and density, causing it to sink. This water mass is characterized by temperatures below 0°C and a salinity of approximately 34.9 practical salinity units (PSU).
