Weddell Deep Water

Term · Meteorology and atmospheric science · MLC-T-MET-010193

A cold, dense water mass formed in the Weddell Sea off Antarctica, characterized by its low temperature and high salinity. It originates from the cooling and salinization of shelf waters, which then sink and flow northward along the seafloor. This water mass contributes significantly to the global thermohaline circulation, influencing ocean currents worldwide.
