Deep water
Term · Meteorology and atmospheric science · MLC-T-MET-004892
Oceanic water that is sufficiently deep such that surface waves do not feel the bottom, meaning the water depth is greater than half of the wavelength. In this regime, wave speed depends only on wavelength and gravity, not on depth. This condition applies to most open ocean areas, where typical wind waves have wavelengths much shorter than the ocean depth.
