Deep sound channel
Term · Meteorology and atmospheric science · MLC-T-MET-004891
A layer in the ocean, typically found at depths between 600 and 1200 meters, where the speed of sound is at a minimum. This minimum sound speed creates a waveguide that traps and efficiently propagates sound waves over very long distances. It is also known as the SOFAR (Sound Fixing and Ranging) channel.
