SOFAR technology
Term · Meteorology and atmospheric science · MLC-T-MET-009009
A method for underwater tracking and communication that uses the SOFAR (Sound Fixing and Ranging) channel. This is a horizontal layer in the ocean where the speed of sound is at a minimum, causing sound waves to be refracted back into the channel and travel for thousands of kilometers with minimal signal loss. The technology is used for long-range acoustic monitoring of oceanographic phenomena, seismic events, and marine mammals, with applications in both oceanography and geophysics.
