Soft radiation
Term · Meteorology and atmospheric science · MLC-T-MET-009010
Electromagnetic or particle radiation with low energy and limited ability to penetrate matter. In atmospheric science, this includes the less energetic portions of the ultraviolet spectrum and soft X-rays that are absorbed in the upper atmosphere. This absorption heats the thermosphere and creates the ionosphere, contrasting with hard radiation, which has higher energy and can penetrate deeper into or through the atmosphere.
