Acoustic echo sounding
Term · Meteorology and atmospheric science · MLC-T-MET-003239
A remote sensing technique that uses sound waves to probe the lower atmosphere, particularly the atmospheric boundary layer. A sodar (sound detection and ranging) system emits acoustic pulses and detects the echoes scattered back by temperature and wind inhomogeneities. This method provides vertical profiles of wind speed and direction, as well as information on atmospheric stability and turbulence.
