Acoustic backscattering

Term · Meteorology and atmospheric science · MLC-T-MET-003236

The reflection of sound waves back towards their source after encountering particles or inhomogeneities in the medium. In the atmosphere, this phenomenon is used by sodars (sonic detection and ranging) to detect and measure properties of atmospheric structures. The intensity and Doppler shift of the backscattered signal provide information on wind speed, turbulence, and temperature inversions.
