Acoustic reflection profiling

Term · Meteorology and atmospheric science · MLC-T-MET-003248

A geophysical technique that uses sound waves to map subsurface structures by analyzing the reflections from interfaces between layers with different acoustic properties. In atmospheric science, this principle is applied to study atmospheric layers, such as inversions or fronts, by detecting echoes from density and temperature discontinuities. This method provides vertical profiles of atmospheric structure.
