Acoustic reflectivity

Term · Meteorology and atmospheric science · MLC-T-MET-003249

The fraction of incident acoustic energy that is reflected from a boundary or discontinuity within a medium. In the atmosphere, this property relates to the strength of echoes received by acoustic sounders, indicating the magnitude of variations in temperature, humidity, or wind. Higher reflectivity suggests stronger atmospheric inhomogeneities, such as those found at inversion layers.
