Acoustic scattering

Term · Meteorology and atmospheric science · MLC-T-MET-003253

The redirection of sound waves in multiple directions as they encounter inhomogeneities or obstacles within a medium. In atmospheric science, this occurs when sound interacts with turbulent eddies, temperature gradients, or particulate matter like aerosols and hydrometeors. The degree of scattering depends on the wavelength of the sound and the size and properties of the scattering objects.
