Acoustic impedance

Term · Meteorology and atmospheric science · MLC-T-MET-003241

A measure of the opposition a medium presents to the propagation of sound waves, defined as the product of the medium's density and the speed of sound within it. Differences in acoustic impedance at an interface cause sound waves to reflect or refract. In atmospheric acoustics, variations in temperature and wind shear create impedance changes that affect sound propagation and scattering.
