Acoustic refraction
Term · Meteorology and atmospheric science · MLC-T-MET-003250
The bending of sound waves as they pass through a medium with varying sound speed, which is influenced by temperature, humidity, and wind. In the atmosphere, temperature inversions or wind shear can cause sound waves to refract, altering their propagation path. This phenomenon can affect sound propagation over long distances and is a factor in atmospheric sound ranging.
