Atmospheric refraction
Term · Meteorology and atmospheric science · MLC-T-MET-003683
The bending of light or other electromagnetic waves as they pass through the Earth's atmosphere, caused by variations in the refractive index of air. This phenomenon makes celestial objects appear higher in the sky than their true position and is responsible for mirages. The amount of refraction depends on temperature, pressure, and humidity.
