Mirage

An optical phenomenon that produces a displaced image of distant objects due to the refraction of light through layers of air with different temperatures and densities. Inferior mirages, common over hot surfaces, make objects appear lower or inverted. Superior mirages, occurring over cold surfaces, make objects appear elevated or stretched.
