Superior mirage
Term · Meteorology and atmospheric science · MLC-T-MET-009411
An optical phenomenon where an object appears to be displaced upwards from its true position, or an inverted image appears above the real object. This occurs when the air near the surface is colder than the air above it, causing light rays to bend downwards. Superior mirages are common in polar regions over cold water or ice.
