Nova Zemlya

Term · Meteorology and atmospheric science · MLC-T-MET-007624

An atmospheric optical phenomenon observed in polar regions, where the sun appears to rise earlier or set later than astronomically predicted, or is visible when it should be below the horizon. This effect is caused by strong atmospheric refraction, particularly temperature inversions, which bend light rays over the curvature of the Earth. It is named after the Novaya Zemlya archipelago in the Arctic Ocean, where it was first documented.
