Looming

Term · Meteorology and atmospheric science · MLC-T-MET-007046

An atmospheric optical phenomenon where objects located below the horizon appear elevated or distorted, sometimes even visible when they should be obscured by the Earth's curvature. This occurs due to abnormal refraction of light rays through layers of air with varying densities, typically when a temperature inversion is present. It is a type of mirage.
