Stooping
Term · Meteorology and atmospheric science · MLC-T-MET-009273
An atmospheric mirage that makes distant objects appear vertically compressed or shorter than they actually are. This optical phenomenon is a type of superior mirage caused by abnormal refraction when a layer of warmer, less dense air sits above a layer of colder, denser air near the surface. Stooping is the opposite of towering, a mirage effect that causes objects to appear stretched vertically.
