Sinking

Term · Meteorology and atmospheric science · MLC-T-MET-008902

The downward movement of air in the atmosphere, also known as subsidence. This motion typically leads to adiabatic warming and drying of the air, which suppresses cloud formation and precipitation. Sinking air is characteristic of high-pressure systems and contributes to clear skies and stable atmospheric conditions.
