Downwelling

The process of water sinking from the surface to deeper layers in an ocean or lake, or air descending in the atmosphere. In oceans, it often occurs where surface waters converge or are cooled, increasing their density. Atmospheric downwelling is associated with high-pressure systems and clear skies.
